The Unlike universe revolves around different characters living in a world where humans do not exist. Instead anthropomorphic animals rule the world. A scientist called Iwan Nowak recently created a new species, called ‚Projects‘, who possess abilities that normal anthros don’t. Their existence and upcoming conflict in the world will shape the story as it goes on.

From Then Till Now

Unlike originally started out as a very different comic project from what it has become now.

The first ever public upload I made about the project was a ref-sheet of the three characters the original story was planned to be about. Their names were Jonathan, Cloud and Oliver.
Other characters, like Mehmet, followed shortly after.

The story was supposed to be about Oliver who is getting adopted by Jonathan’s rich and influential family, but not being able to fulfill their expectations of him. And while Jonathan wants to help his little brother but can’t, due to himself having to fulfill their expectations too, Oliver ends up mostly alone and depressed. He finds a new friend in Jonathan’s classmate Cloud who is the stellar opposite. While his family is poor and he himself is quite lazy and laid-back, he manages to help Oliver find some friends in his class and to fix the bond between the two brothers.

But I soon found that the story wasn’t really going anywhere and that I had a lot of characters that weren’t really doing anything in the story itself. But the solution was right in front of my eyes, I just didn’t see it yet.

During the same time when I was working on Unlike, I had also changed my furry persona (or fursona), started fleshing her story out a bit more and introduced Nao, who was known as ‚Anti-Nao‘ back then and would later become the main protagonist of the Unlike universe, in January 2011. At the beginning of February 2011, I started posting chapters of Smooth Criminal, the story of Nao, Naoko and Iwan Nowak.

Three months later I had the idea that would turn Unlike into what it is today. I had realized that the original story was too flat and needed something different in order to work. Three days after I had finished posting all 12 chapters of Smooth Criminal, on May 15. 2011 I made this post to DeviantArt, informing my followers that the two ideas would be merged and turned into the official sequel comic of Smooth Criminal, featuring Nao as the main protagonist once again.

And ten days later the comic cover had its debut.
For three months pages kept coming and the script was heading its way.
But after August 2011, comic uploads for Unlike would stop coming. Here you can see all the pages
of the original comic.

4 years long I did not make any comic related art posts about Unlike. During this time a lot of commotion happened between people who had affiliated characters to characters of Unlike and a decision was made that would eventually put Unlike to an even longer hiatus.

Because a lot of shipping was going on between the characters of Unlike and the ones of my, at the time, best friend we decided to turn the comic into a collaborative project. I would add their characters into the comic and together we would rewrite the script to incorporate them in a fitting matter.

In 2014 I started replacing the cover and old comic pages with reworked versions that would then lead into the new story.

While I am not going into any specifics, because there is a lot more problems involved with this whole ordeal than needs to be known by the public, I ended up with a script filled with holes. Literal story parts that we agreed my cowriter would write, but never did and instead wanted to focus on completely different RPGs and topics.

So again, after posting the last page on January 1st 2015, the comic would be there, waiting to be continued.
Because those pages make a lot more use of characters not belonging to me, I won’t post the pages here. But you can still read them on Animexx and FurAffinity.

There were, however, signs of life in both the story and universe of Unlike, ever present, trying to break free.

In September 2017 I started giving Smooth Criminal a revamp, since the old chapters had very crude writing and were overall very unpolished. But due to me starting to focus more on making a living out of my drawing and having to juggle job, friends and everything around it, with the third chapter being posted in February 2018 Smooth Criminal would enter a sleeper phase again.

Due to many other reasons involved I ultimately had to step away from the person involved in the collaborative project in 2023.

So, what now?

The project ‚Unlike‘ as a whole will not in any way be cancelled. I am now having a chance to bring it back to what it was originally meant to be, the story of my semi-sona Nao and the characters around her. What is now fully cancelled is the collaborative comic project. I am underlining this by turning ‚Unlike‘ into more of an umbrella term for multiple projects within the universe.

The story that was supposed to be told in the comic will be rewritten by me again and published under the new title ‚Back To School‘. Some characters that are highly involved with characters that aren’t mine will not be kept in the spotlight to prevent any further bad blood.

To further accommodate the person involved, I will not change anything about the relationships that have been established by now. I will just work around them, making it as comfortable as possible for them.

That means, for example, that characters like Jordan will leave the story after Smooth Criminal to fulfill their destined relationship, while still being involved in Nao’s story beforehand. A new character will be introduced in Smooth Criminal who will then take her place in later installations.
